Why We Started JUG: The Founder Story

Every brand has an origin story. Ours starts in the beer aisle.

Before JUG, our founder Brock James spent years deep in the Canadian beverage world - - building brands at Cottage Springs and Ace Hill, and before that at Molson Coors Canada. Years of coolers, patios, festivals, golf tournaments, and watching what people actually reach for when they want a drink in their hand.

And there was a pattern you couldn't unsee: half the cooler wanted something cold and fun to hold that wasn't alcohol - and their options were a warm plastic water bottle or nothing.

The gap in the cooler

Beer got the great branding, the tallboy can, the moment around the bonfire. Water - the thing everybody actually needs more of - got a flimsy plastic bottle and zero personality.

Meanwhile in the US, canned water was taking off and proving the idea: people will choose water when it doesn't feel like a punishment. But nobody was building that for Canada - made here, sold here, priced for here.

So Brock left beer to sell water. Yes, everyone made the joke. No, he doesn't regret it.

Built on a simpler time

JUG is inspired by a Canada that feels a little lost: fresh water delivered door-to-door by people who took pride in the route, coworkers around the water cooler, hand-painted signs, the truck that always started on the third try. Vintage workwear, '80s mechanic vibes, greasy spoons and dive bars and boat rides.

That's the world on our can. Utilitarian but elevated. Tough yet refreshing. Water that can hang anywhere a beer can - because the best nights don't need a blurry ending.

What JUG actually is

No mystery in the can: Canadian water, filtered by reverse osmosis until it's as clean as water gets, in a 473 mL aluminum can. Cans get colder faster, don't shatter, and are infinitely recyclable — back on the shelf in about 60 days, while plastic bottles mostly end up as landfill.

From the trunk of a car to the corner store

JUG started the way most good Canadian brands do: cases in the trunk, handshakes, and a lot of "have you ever tried a canned water?" First the bars and restaurants said yes. Then the golf courses. Then the offices, the hotels, the caterers.

Today JUG is poured at 750+ bars, restaurants, golf courses, and hotels, stocked at Circle K stores across Ontario, distributed through Bondi Produce, Sysco, and GFS - and shipped anywhere in Canada from jug.ca.

This ride's just getting started.

The bet, in one line

Water deserves its moment. Canada deserves its own canned water. And nobody should have to choose between a good time and a clear head.

Cold. Crisp. Canadian. Just how it should be. Come find us — or mix in a few JUGs and taste what the fuss is about.
